The last designer bag I almost bought cost $520. I was holding it under a department store spotlight, and out of habit I turned the inside label over. The fiber line was shorter than the brand story stitched next to it.

That was the moment it stopped making sense to me. Not the bag — the bag was fine. The math.

A woven bag is straw, leather or silk, plus hands and hours. Those hands live in specific places: raffia families in Laizhou who have looped straw since the 1970s, silk mills around Suzhou, leather weavers who still do the strap-by-strap lattice a machine can't. That's the part you carry.

The rest of a $500 price is the part you don't carry: the logo license, the flagship rent, the campaign with the actress. It's a fine thing to pay for — if you know that's what you're paying for.

Wildfool started with a plane ticket, not a mood board. We source each fiber where it's actually made — raffia from workshop towns, silk from silk country, cowhide woven by people who have done it long enough to argue about it. Then we put the fiber on the label and price the bag for what it is.

No logo doing the heavy lifting. If someone asks about your bag, the answer is a material, not a brand.

No monogram to signal across a room. Each piece is made to order, so it's about two weeks to your door, not two days. And batches are small — when a colorway is gone, it's usually gone for the season. If you need the room to notice the label, we're the wrong shop.

I still think designer houses make beautiful things. I just stopped paying for the part of them I can't carry.
